In the Akamas nature reserve of Cyprus, people tell the story of a hunter named Andreas, one of the finest hunters of his age. During the rule of the Lusignans, he guided noblemen on hunts through Akamas and became famous for the accuracy of his bow. One day, the king’s knights decided to test his skill. An archery competition was held in Arodes, at the entrance to Akamas. Greeks, Franks, Italians and Englishmen arrived to compete, there were many of them in Cyprus in those days. Only Andreas and an unknown man wearing a yellow hood remained in the final round. Their arrows struck the target without fail. Then the stranger removed his robe, and everyone saw the ancient god Eros, son of Aphrodite. Enraged that a mortal had proven equal to him, the god of love raised his bow against the hunter. At that moment, an Orthodox monk who had come to the spring for holy water stepped out of the crowd. He quickly recited a prayer. Thunder shook the sky, and the arrow of the pagan god missed its target and became lodged in a wall. Overwhelmed by the miracle, Andreas abandoned his fame as a hunter and became a monk. They say that the arrow disappeared during the Turkish invasion, but that it can now be found once again on one of the walls of Arodes. It is said that touching it brings good fortune in love. The one who counts five arrow flights from the correct place shall rejoice!
