Have you heard the story of how St Mamas outwitted the God Dionysus? They say their contest took place beneath the stars of Akamas, where the Arodes Astropark stands today. Dionysus knew all the secrets of grapes. After a single sip, he could identify the grape variety and the year of the harvest. But St Mamas offered him a taste of Commandaria. Dionysus tasted the wine and fell silent. Its flavour contained something unknown to him. The recipe for Commandaria was known to the Knights Hospitaller, but its history was far older. The recipe preserved the memory of a blessing brought to the island by the first disciples of Christ, who spoke of the wine of the Last Supper. For many days, the god tried to reproduce the flavour. He changed the vines, the aging process and the barrels, but every attempt ended in failure. At last, Dionysus admitted defeat and withdrew into the Troodos Mountains, leaving the island to St Mamas. Since then, the saint has watched over the vineyards of Cyprus. On quiet evenings, the wind can be heard among the peaks of the Troodos Mountains.
