Small coincidences in history sometimes give birth to great legends. The Museum of Templar Ages did not appear in Arodes by accident. By an irony of fate, it is located in the building of the old cooperative bank, a place where the village once kept its most valuable possessions. Today, this building remembers those who created some of the first banks in Europe. But there is another coincidence. After the fall of the Knights Templar, it was the Hospitallers who accepted those Templars who had not been burned at the stake, together with their lands and castles. The same thing happened in Cyprus. History has preserved documents recording the transfer of property, but the names of the Templar knights disappeared without finding a place on the parchment. Such documents rarely tell us about the lives of ordinary brothers of the Order. Could exiled Templars have found shelter after 1312 in a small Hospitaller village among the hills of Akamas? No documents capable of providing a certain answer have survived. Yet history knows many cases in which the defeated found refuge in silence. Perhaps one of them once managed a vineyard here. Another may have taught the local boys how to hold a sword. A third may have spent long hours in the underground catacomb church, praying for his innocent brothers who had been killed. We shall never know their names. The archives of the Order were lost during the Ottoman invasion. Perhaps that is precisely why the museum stands here. Sometimes a possibility can be more important than facts, because possibility gives birth to hope. The hope that Arodes became a place of refuge for the persecuted Knights of the Temple. Even if this is only a legend, it still tells us about what matters most: mercy.
