Ancient myths say that there were once two dragons in Cyprus. One lived among the plains of Mesaoria, while the other made its home among the cliffs of Paphos. For many years, they fought over which of them had the right to guard the island. The battle was finally decided in the sky above Akamas, and the defeated dragon left the island. Since then, the dragon of Akamas has never shown itself to people again. They say that its breath became the wind above Avakas Gorge, its eyes became the stars above the peninsula, and its wings sheltered rare flowers and ancient paths from strangers.
